Project Description

Project PHoENIX (Participatory, Human-centered, Equitable, Neurodiverse, and Inclusive XR) seeks to engage in design-based research to create advanced virtual reality technology systems and tools which will enable inclusive research and development of immersive learning technologies in collaboration with autistic research participants. The developed technology systems, design methods, and research processes will be used to facilitate a multi-site focus group research study within the VR space. The purpose of this focus group study will be to elicit perspectives regarding language, priorities, and values of autistic research participants towards developing novel, user-centered inquiry and implementation frameworks for engaging in co-design within VR environments and conducting collaborative research with autistic stakeholders. This research gains significance in its innovative approach to developing advanced VR environments, inclusion of underserved vulnerable populations (transition-aged adults with autism), focus on issues that are both relevant to the autism community and resonant with funding agencies’ priorities, and development of generalizable knowledge in the form of inclusive co-design frameworks.
