Research Project

Patricide and Parental Guidance within the Comedy
There are overlapping concepts in both Freud’s Dissolution of the Oedipus Complex and Dante’s Divine Comedy relating to the developmental stages of the psyche. My project seeks to apply the physical conditions of the Complex to the situations within the Comedy to provide insight on spiritual growth as it relates to familial power dynamics. I will focus on analyzing Dante’s relationship with the motherly Beatrice as well as father figures including Brunetto Latini, Virgil, and Statius.
