Rape Prosecution in Alachua County: The Role of the State Attorney’s Office?

Despite the high prevalence and devastating consequences associated with rape, it is the most under-reported crime in the U.S., and even those cases that are reported are unlikely to proceed all the way through the criminal justice system. The purpose of this research project is to gain a better understanding of how, where, and why these sexual assault cases fall out of the legal system. More specifically, I plan to work in conjunction with the State Attorney’s office and the Gainesville Police Department to research the progression of individual sexual assault cases through the system, from the State Attorney’s decision to prosecute a case to the outcomes of subsequent trials or settlements. The ultimate aim of the project is to produce useful information for community and service providing stakeholders, helping to create a roadmap for future prevention, intervention, and service provision efforts.
