I am designing an electronic device called the Personal Comfort Node (PCN). Its ultimate purpose is to provide data to create a control system that makes a building HVAC system more energy efficient and makes the people inside the building more comfortable. The PCN contains several sensors to record data types of temperature, humidity, CO2 concentrations, human occupancy, volatile organic compound concentrations, and light intensity. The device also has a touch screen that lets a user rate their comfort level on a scale of -3 to 3 with -3 being cold, 3 being hot, and 0 being neutral. The device will be manufactured in mass and deployed in an office building for data collection with each person having their own device. Using all this data, the control system will be made to alter the HVAC system according to each person’s comfort profile.
