Research Project

Documenting the distribution and diversity of edible chanterelles (Cantharellus spp.) in Florida

Cantharellus is a popular genus of edible ectomycorrhizal fungi commonly known as Chanterelles. Chanterelles are among the most widely collected edible fungi and many species are widely regarded as choice edibles. Knowledge of Cantharellus species in Florida is limited because many species are morphologically similar and can only be reliably identified by microscopic features and phylogenetic analysis. Thus, it is unclear which Cantharellus species are actually present here in Florida. Molecular methods used in this project will most likely reveal undescribed species amongĀ Cantharellus collections in Florida.
