In my research, I aim to discover the extent to which insurance type (uninsured, Medicaid, Medicare, and private), health literacy level, and trauma affect the willingness of patients to try alternative treatment modalities for chronic back pain, dental pain, and/or headache pain. Through JMP Pro, a statistical analysis system, I will analyze survey results taken from the emergency department patients and the Gainesville community to determine if these variables are statistically significant barriers to realistic application of alternative treatments to opioids. This comprehensive survey asks age, sex, race, type of pain, insurance, health literacy, family history with opioids, and offers transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, physical therapy, acupuncture, trigger point injections, chiropractic, and topical medication as possible alternatives to opioids to manage pain. Overall, I hope to be able to determine if these variables statistically show coverage and education limitations in influencing willingness to receive alternatives to make predictions whether policy changes or procurement of alternatives will combat the opioid crisis.
