Assessing Heritage Spanish Students’ Language Ideologies?

The broad goal of this study is to examine students’ responses for the purpose of developing pedagogical improvements to better accommodate Heritage Spanish speaking (HSS) students in university Spanish courses. More specifically, this study aims to examine the relationship between HSS student background and HSS teacher background, to determine if students’ attitudes toward their own linguistic varieties affect their attitudes toward their teachers or vice versa.
Previous study has shown HSS students are highly critical of HSS teachers—a group to which they belong—and I aim to explore whether this is due to negative experiences with HSS instructors in the past, negative psychosocial beliefs about HSSs in general, or something else.
