Automated systems, such as self-driving cars and artificial intelligence, will be a prominent part of our personal and work lives in the near future. In the past, complex automated systems (e.g., air plane autopilots, automated systems in manufacturing and process control) often required highly trained operators. However, this type of training will no longer be feasible once automated systems become more prevalent. Instead, users must have general skills and knowledge to understand how to learn and interact with the automated systems they encounter. In this project, we aim to understand how individuals learn to use automated systems such as self-driving cars in order to build new training methods to help users safely and effectively adopt automated systems.
