Research Project

Environmentally-aware Feature Extraction/Selection and Classification of Underwater Objects in Synthetic Aperture Sonar Imagery for Mine Countermeasures?

I will be helping to develop an environmentally aware automatic target recognition (ATR) system. My work consists of pre-training and fine-tuning deep learning architectures to automatically process and analyze sonar imagery. I will also be exploring the development of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques to provide more insight into the characteristics of the data and try to understand how the deep learning architectures are making decisions. Currently, it is very challenging to understand was deep learning methods are doing. The deep learning architectures are commonly referred to as “black boxes” because of this challenge. It is very exciting to be working on research that can improve these capabilities and advance the field.
