This project focuses on the topic of strategies and consumer tactics by observing recycling behaviors at the University of Florida. For my research framework I adopt the distinction made by French social scientist Michel de Certeau between the “strategies” of those in power who seek to direct the behaviors of consumers, and the “tactics” employed by those consumers, which are often at odds with institutional strategies. By observing acts of recycling or their material effects and analyzing the motivation factors behind it, I propose to gauge the degree of disjuncture between the strategies and tactics of recycling.
