Summer Undergraduate International Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate International Research Program (SUIRP) provides University of Florida undergraduate researchers with a life-changing opportunity to conduct research at a foreign institution.

Previous Scholars have conducted research in Uganda, Argentina, France, Italy, and many other countries. University of Florida students in any discipline may apply for SUIRP. Students receive a summer international research award of up to $5000 to cover travel and living expenses.

Eligibility

  • Minimum 1 year of UF research experience
  • Must have a valid passport*Passports can take up to 2 months to receive
  • Must not be graduating before December of the calendar year
  • Must be an 8-10 week program

How to Apply

Students applying to SUIRP will apply directly to the Center for Undergraduate Research and must be submitted in person the the CUR office in Newell Hall, Room 202.  Any incomplete applications will not be considered for this award.

2023 SUIRP Scholars

Application Deadline

Students applying to the SUIRP will apply directly to the Center for Undergraduate Research.  When submitting your application, please provide the following items:

  • December 2023Application Open

  • Late February - Early March 2024SUIRP participants chosen and announcement sent to students

Application Requirements

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)Two page maximum, with 11 or 12pt font, 1" margins. Your CV should emphasize your previous research experience, any international experience, academic background (including publications and awards).
  • Statement of Proposed Research ProjectYour statement should be 2-3 pages, with 11-12pt font, 1" margins. Your statement should define the goals and objectives of the proposed research project and the description of the work to be accomplished during the period abroad.
  • Projected BudgetCannot exceed $5000, including $457 in fees
  • Letter of Support from Foreign Research InstitutionThis letter should confirm that the institution agrees to host the UF student. The letters can be addressed to the ISP Review Committee and should be included in your application package.
  • Letter of Support from Faculty Research MentorThe letter should affirm the student's strengths as an undergraduate researcher and show support for the candidate to engage fully in the program and fulfill the required program responsibilities

Program Requirements

  • Register with the International Center
  • Enroll in a one credit course (determined after selection)
  • Attend the pre-trip orientation
  • Attend weekly group skype/facebook calls during trip
  • Attend post-trip debrief meeting
  • Present your work at the Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium

Each SUIRP Scholar is required to make a presentation at the University of Florida Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium by presenting a poster, an original creative work, or their e-portfolio.  

E-Portfolio Requirements

Every SUIRP Scholar is required to create an online e-portfolio through Wix, Weebly, or Squarespace.

Weekly Research Log

Every student is required to keep a weekly research log. This log would be updated at the end of every week and would highlight the accomplishments and activities conducted.

Reflection Journal

Each student is required to have a reflection journal. Questions will be posed to the students weekly and the student are required to reflect on their experience abroad in this section.

Photo Gallery

Students are required to document, not only their research, but also their cultural experiences from the trip.
