The Florida-Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance (FGLSA) is a coalition of twelve academic institutions in Florida and one in Georgia with a commitment to increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, particularly by groups that historically have been at disadvantage. The long-term goal of FGLSA is to increase the number of students from disadvantaged populations in STEM fields who earn doctorates by stimulating interest in graduate study and providing  the tools necessary for academic success. FGLSA is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and includes over 1000 talented undergraduates from across Florida and Georgia.

To be eligible to apply, a student must:

  • Be a Junior in a STEM major
  • Be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident and disadvantaged as described below:
  • Be currently involved in undergraduate research
  • Be planning on applying for Graduate School (This does NOT include professional schools such as medicine, dentistry, etc)
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5

Program Requirements:

  • Attend all FGLSA scholar meetings and workshops as scheduled
  • Engage in a research project with a mentor
  • Attend the annual Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (February)
  • Attend the annual University of Florida Undergraduate Research Symposium (April)

Criteria for disadvantaged designation:-


To be eligible for the Program, the student must have a disability or be from a disadvantaged background according to program criteria, such as:A) Individuals with disabilities, defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; or 

B) Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as meeting at least two of the following seven criteria:

1. Were or currently are homeless, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act;

2. Were or currently are in the foster care system, as defined by the Administration for Children and Families;

3. Were eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for two or more years;

4. Have/had no parents or legal guardians who completed a bachelor’s degree (see the U.S. Department of Education);

5. Were or currently are eligible for Federal Pell grants;

6. Received support from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children as a parent or child;

7. Grew up in one of the following areas: 

a) a U.S. rural area, as designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration Rural Health Grants Eligibility Analyzer, or 

b) a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services-designated Low-Income and Health Professional Shortage Areas. Only one of the two possibilities in #7 can be used as a criterion for the disadvantaged background.
